Hath been cursed

The state of Andhra Pradesh is home to people of different religions and communities. One such community among the Hindus is called Velama, they comprised the military group under the kings, history records their existence from the mid 15th century .This community extended from part of Maratha region(then Vidharbha), Karnataka and extended down Telangana to the coastal Andhra Pradesh.

The rise of this warrior group can be seen during the Kakatiya Period and eventually their ascend to the throne is shown in the history. This did not last long, a cruel ruler of this sect had created a new taxation system in which he created goblets in the shape of a woman's breast, where the women filled a goblet which matched their breast size with coins- the tax! This lascivious law of the ruler ruined the rise of the future generations to the pinnacle of glory due to curse by a lady of the kingdom. When once the king's men asked a woman to measure her bosom size with a goblet, she chopped her breast on the spot and died laying her curse on the community forever. This story seems fictional however the talent of these mighty warriors cannot be denigrated by a curse.

PRESERVE YOUR GREENS THE “ECO FRIENDLY AND ECONOMIC” WAY

Two students of Rajalakshmi Engineering College have come up with an innovative idea to preserve greens on a small scale in an Eco friendly and cost effective way.
Given the Indian scenario that more than 40% of the farm produce of fruits and veggies is lost to spoilage during storage and transport it is very important to concentrate on preserving the produce in an economically viable and environment friendly manner.

N.Gayathree and Gayatri Shankar are final year students of the Department of Biotechnology of Rajalakshmi Engineering College. According to these students they envisioned this creative concept of developing such bags last year when they were working on a class assignment. A further study on the ripening of fruits helped them understand the current scenario of fruit preservation and helped them engage in employing easily available raw materials for the development of their product. The product is a double layered bag with the property of maintaining an Ethylene free atmosphere for the fruits placed inside it. The main aim is to resolve the problems associated with loss of produce due to over ripening and thus associated spoilage of fruits. These bags have been tested by them using green tomatoes and found to have a good effect in delaying the ripening of the same by 6 days. The team intends to carry out further tests related to the toxicity and the effect on different types of fruits in the near future.

A page from my diary

There are some people who turn out to be close to you during a season of your life- my case college! I have seen one such person a really brilliant girl in her younger years, a person whom all my friends including myself regarded as a person who should be part of the scientific community for her consistent dedication and perseverance to unravel the mysteries of science! Ha ha..i never thought i would actually study in a college with her! Wow! Its really satisfying that the dream of a successful scientist is on her way. It is at these times even atheist turns theist, there is a supreme being above us who at times ensures justice is awarded to hard work and talent. Thanks god! The foundation has been laid! :)
